Noughts and Crosses

If you've read my work, you'll know that I really enjoy designing warp-twining bands with many non-repeating motifs. Lately, I wanted something a little simpler, but still in the same style, so I came up with this one and I thought it would be fun to share it. 

Apart from the six selvedge tablets, it's twist neutral, so you won't get any build up of twist behind the pattern tablets. I've been flipping the selvedge tablets after every two repetitions of the draft. I wove it in King Cole Merino Blend 4-ply as it has a good range of colours and has the bonus of being superwash. The band is 5cm wide.

As with all of the free patterns on this site, you are welcome to weave them, sell bands woven using them, and use them to teach other weavers, just as long as you state where you found them.

    That is gorgeous! I really love the way you chart your graphs; it's the most clear instruction style, at least for me. I've had your book for awhile, and can't wait to start on a few of the patterns, but this one might have to come first.

    I want to thank you Catherine for providing this for free, truly appreciated, thank you! And now that I have found this beautiful pattern I will have to make this as my next project. Looking at the image of the woven band I was surprised that it only takes 30 cards to make this amazing braid. Is it a Kivrim design? It does remind me of others that I've seen. Now I just have to find some nice yarn and colours to go with this project, and once I finish the braid I'm weaving at the moment, I will have a go at this lovely and slightly challenging pattern to add to my collection of braids ready to add to various garments, etc.

      Glad you like it, it's one of my favourites. :) It's a nice rhythmic weave.
      It's a common misconception that this type of design is kivrim, due to the placement of some text in Peter Collingwood's "Techniques of Tablet Weaving". Kivrim is the family of designs that also include ram's horn and running dog and are threaded-in, rather than individual turning like this one.
